Description

Developed by NASA as the first reusable U.S. space vehicle, the entire Space Shuttle system consists of a winged orbiter, two solid-rocket boosters, and an external fuel tank.

After four orbital test flights (1982-82) of the space shuttle Columbia, operational flights began in November 1982.
